a bit of history

The village of Monteriggioni clings to a smail hillside, enclosed in the impressive circuit of walls. From a distance the first impression as we glance from one foursided tower to the other (there are all of fourteen set along the walls) is that time has stood still and we are still in the Middle Ages. The village was built in 1203 by the Sienese who used it as an outpost against the Florentines and as a result of its critical site it often changed hands. The walls went up between 1213 and 1219 and extend for about 570 meters, encircling the tiny but compact charming village which has a fine Pansh Church built in a transitional Romanesque-Gothic style.
